Moderate safety integrity. Common in driver assistance and comfort systems where failures could cause injury but controllability remains feasible.

HARA
Hazard Analysis & Risk Assessment

Severity (S) estimates the worst-case harm to persons if the hazardous event occurs, independent of exposure or controllability.

Light injuries
Superficial or minor injuries, fully recoverable
S2
Serious injuries
Severe injuries, survival probable but recovery uncertain
S3
Life-threatening / fatal
Fatal or permanently disabling injuries

Verification & Validation
Unit Testing

Verifies individual software units in isolation against their specifications. Required at ASIL A–D with coverage criteria scaled to ASIL level.

The first phase of the ISO 26262 safety lifecycle involves identifying all potential hazards associated with the item and determining the required safety integrity level (ASIL) for each safety goal. This forms the foundation for all subsequent safety engineering activities.
